My personal and practical handbook for becoming the architect I want to be!

On the Making of Architecture

During my studies in architecture, I have often thought of the construction context that I am about to enter. In architecture school, you learn and advance in how to give form to a space or furniture. But then what about the making of the architecture that you have shaped: the building, the production of it? How do you actually do it? And how do you make sure that your artistic intentions with a design follow through to the building and production phase? I believe that it has to do with understanding how the construction and furniture production industries work and how you as an architect can navigate in this context, what your role is or could be.

With these questions in mind, I have written a handbook to myself where I try to give some answers to the questions. The handbook is a tool on my way of becoming the architect I want to become. As a part of my research for the book, I interviewed five architects and designers and two furniture production companies in order to collect contemporary opinions on the context of the architect.

For the practical part of the project, I have explored the space around the handbook and designed two furniture pieces for books, book containers. I believe that books are somehow always on the fore in our society, they matter. There is a similarity between books and architecture in the sense that they both tell stories and shape our surroundings, whether it is the physical world or in our minds. I want to capture some of this in the book containers; I want to visualize how poetic our ordinary reality can be, I want to enchant.

On the Making of Architecture
