Ergo Arm – the flexible welding aid

Being a welder requires patience, precision and strength. Welders working at stations are expected to work fast and efficiently. However, observations, contextual interviews and workshops proved that today’s equipment is not supporting the welder’s way of working.

In the daily work, the welders are forced to carry the heavy weight from both torch and cable while constantly changing the grip and body position. Back, neck and wrist-pain are only a few of the issues that the equipment is responsible for. A lot of time is wasted on unnecessary tasks, not related to the welding itself; like moving around the cable again and again to reach a new location, or preparation of the work in general. These are time-consuming tasks that have not been taken into consideration when today’s welding tools are designed.

In collaboration with ESAB, I have in this master thesis been focusing on defining new working possibilities for the welder. These possibilities allow the welder to work ergonomically and avoid time consuming issues related to the handling of the welding torch and the cable. My goal is to create a better working environment within the welding industry.

Ergo Arm – the flexible welding aid
