Speaking Volumes: Illuminating the Gesture-Space

Speaking Volumes: Illuminating the Gesture-Space

The gesture-space that occurred when I said the word ”conglomerate” on Febuary 3rd, 2014, during a conversation with a friend, which was then cast in marble.

“– Say it, no ideas but in things – “*

The gesture is a mode through which some subtle aspects of our use of language are made manifest. The forms that result from this interaction with language have been the focus of Joel Hurlburt’s work to illuminate what he calls the gesture-space. With an interest in the peripheral phenomena of everyday life, he has found that in these otherwise banal moments, the uncodifiable becomes apparent. While at Konstfack, he has worked to plot the unique objects that come into being through gestures. Such movements circumscribe ideas and concepts with no actual form. These spaces exist momentarily within the context of a voluble discourse, formed together with the gestures that accompany the simultaneous acts of thinking and speaking. The gestures of hands show that, for a moment, ideas can become things.
